    • نبذة مختصرة :
Hyperglycemia is associated with malfunctioning of beta cells of pancreas and has been linked with the mortality of the pancreatic cells. The present study aims to evaluate the hypoglycemic action of L-Tryptophan (Trp) in Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Adult albino Wistar rats (n=6/group) were divided into normal control, diabetic control, tryptophan control and tryptophan treated diabetic group. Diabetes was induced by single dose of STZ (50mg/kg body weight) intraperitoneally. Trp was administered on daily basis for 10 days. On 11th day after sacrifice, Intestinal absorption of glucose, Pancreatic and intestinal Na+-K+ ATPase (NKA) activity, intestinal Nitric Oxide (NO), Blood & pancreatic Glucagon like peptide-1(GLP-1), serum total protein, urea and cholesterol, liver and pancreatic histology were studied. A significant decrease in the glucose absorption and blood glucose level in the tryptophan treated diabetic group in comparison with diabetic controls. A significant increase was seen in pancreatic GLP-1 levels in treatment group. A significant recovery in serum proteins, cholesterol and blood urea levels in the treated group. Marked histological changes in liver and pancreas between diabetic and Trp groups suggesting restoring effects of tryptophan in diabetic group suggesting that it would be a future “magic molecule” in the diabetic therapeutics.
