Studying abroad provides many benefits for students; beyond academic learning, it offers an opportunity for students to explore their understanding of themselves and others in a global context. LGBTQIA+ students study abroad and may do so at greater rates than cisgender and straight students. However, there is a paucity of research to inform inclusive study abroad policies, programs, and practices for queer students. Currently, little is known about the experiences of transgender and gender expansive (TGE) students studying abroad, especially critically attending to their experiences through an intersectional lens. Therefore, the present study used consensual qualitative research to analyze interviews with 15 American TGE study abroad alumni. Participants described the ways they prepared for the experience as a TGE student. Once abroad, their experience was shaped by the cultural systems and institutions in their host country, including language, politics, and healthcare. They discussed how their identities and cultural contexts influenced their experiences of gender, race, ethnicity, and physical presentation. Finally, participants shared advice for future TGE students; despite experiencing many harms, participants encouraged students to study abroad, but advised that they set personal boundaries and pay attention to safety issues. Recommendations for future research and institutional considerations are presented to make study abroad more accessible, safe, and enriching for TGE students.
