      SIGNIFICANCE: US immigration law historically excluded openly gay and lesbian individuals on various bases—ranging from classifications as morally or medically unfit to the government’s perception of them as posing social and political threats to the character of American society. This practice began to be challenged during the 1950s and was eliminated by the Immigration Act of 1990.
