Evaluation of the level of dependence upon the institutionalization of the elderly

Objective: to profile the elderly patients admitted from 2006 to 2008 to a long stay institution, classify the functional level of these patients upon admission according to the scale of Katz and check for the level of dependency prevailing upon admission. Methodology: this is a piece of documental exploratory research on the institutionalization and level of dependency of the elderly when they were admitted to a long-term institution for the elderly. The project was approved by the ethics committee of the faculty of Medicine, Fluminense Federal University through Statement nº 112/08, CAAE Nº 2392.0.000.258-08. Results: This study shows that there was a predominance of women, with most of the elderly being frail, widows or widowers and presenting Alzheimer's dementia. As for the evaluation by Katz´s scale when admitted, 60%% were found to be totally dependent. Conclusion: it is concluded that the study allowed clarifying client’s profile and confirming that, although the level of dependency is not the only reason, it contributes to the institutionalization of the elderly. RESUMO Objetivos: traçar o perfil dos idosos admitidos de 2006 a 2008 em uma instituição de longa permanência para idosos; classificar o nível funcional do idoso no momento da admissão, conforme a Escala de Katz; verificar o nível de dependência predominante no momento da admissão. Metodologia: trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória do tipo documental sobre a institucionalização e o nível de dependência dos idosos no momento em que foram admitidos numa instituição de longa permanência. O projeto de pesquisa foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal Fluminense com parecer de Nº 112/08, CAAE Nº 2392.0.000.258-08.
