This paper presents an investigation about teaching in Mathematics in the Elementary School. The analyzed materials were letters written by pedagogue teachers who teach mathematics in the private schools of Porto Alegre, which deal with beliefs and attitudes about the teaching of mathematics in these stages. The theoretical contributions consist of Michel Foucault's studies on self-writing, evidenced in the letters produced. The results point to at least two questions: "the relevance of teaching mathematics to be connected with elements of life" and "concrete materials as a foundation for learning mathematics". In view of this, it was possible to understand that (also) these statements conform a set of truths that regulate the ways of being teacher of students of the Elementary School.
