Background There are reported disparities in the care provided for women from different ethnic minority backgrounds at specialist and universal maternity services. At worse this has a direct influence on mortality rates, or at least can impact the attachment relationship between parent/infant. Disparities likely exist due to cultural differences around help seeking as well as service barriers. Research appears to indicate that once women access specialist maternity services, the care they receive is positive. However, accessing specialised services is rare; research invariably categorises wide classes of ethnicity into one ‘group’ and the Scottish context of ethnic populations and experiences of universal maternity services has limited research. Focusing on one specific ethnic group and understanding their experiences within Scotland will inform gaps/barriers within maternity services.
