      Wounds are very common in the clinical and surgical routine of dogs and cats, and the most common causes are bites, traffic accidents, lacerations caused by sharp objects, thermal injuries and surgical injuries. after trauma, there is loss of the anatomical integrity of the cutaneous integument, compromising tissue protection, allowing the entry of microorganisms, causing inflammation and local or systemic infection. the present work aimed to carry out a literature review with the aim ofprovide information to help veterinary medicine students and professionals identify the types of skin wounds, the importance of initial wound management as well as describe the main methods of treatment. three important factors are considered for the classification of wounds, which are: the type of wound (open or closed), the degree of contamination and the duration of contamination. this information is essential for choosing the most appropriate treatment for each wound. before treating the wound itself, it is necessary to initially assess the patient with the mapping of his general condition together with its stabilization. the treatment involves procedures such as, shaving, or without washing with antiseptic solutions, debridement of dead tissue, using antibtopical and/or systemic iotics, bandages to establish a viable vascular bed and, finally, wound closure. also available in the market to assist in achieving wound closure using natural products and the therapies alternatives by traditional chinese medicine. it is concluded that the treatment of wounds requires a lot of care, not only by veterinarians but also by tutors, and that knowledge about the etiology of the injury, degree of contamination and possible types of treatment for each situation allow a more effective management and prompt healing . ; As feridas são muito comuns na rotina clínica e cirúrgica de cães e gatos, sendo que as causas mais comuns são mordidas, acidentes de trânsito, lacerações por objetos pontiagudos, lesões térmicas e lesões cirúrgicas.
