نبذة مختصرة : Water stands as a fundamental necessity for sustaining life on Earth and, consequently, plays a pivotal role in promoting human health and fostering sustainable development (UNDP, 2022). Yet, there are many parts of the world where the scarcity and distribution of water are noticeable, according to UN-Water ((a), n.d.) is attributed to various factors, encompassing natural cycles, human activities, and socio-economic influences. El Salvador is one of the countries that has faced and continues to face this issue, and without changes, it risks significant consequences for both the population and the country, but especially for its rural areas. The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to enhance understanding of the current water situation in Cordillera del Bálsamo, a rural area in El Salvador, and how it impacts the daily lives of the population. The work includes presenting various aid organizations to provide their perspectives on the situation, as well as detailing how the community's water boards, "juntas," operate. Additionally, potential improvements in water resource management are explored to increase the likelihood of enforcing the human right to water. To address the chosen research questions, a qualitative study was conducted primarily based on data collected from interviews. This approach aimed to gain a unique insight into the reality and opinions of the population and organizations in the Cordillera del Bálsamo area. Additionally, a supplementary literature review was carried out to capture the context. The study indicates that the Cordillera del Bálsamo region is facing a complex water situation where social, technical, and economic aspects impact their water access and management. Consequently, a variety of changes and improvements are necessary from the residents, organizations, and authorities to enhance water availability. Improved relationships and communication among these stakeholders are also recognized as crucial factors that need to be addressed.
