The use of manipulatives is part of school culture, especially in the early years of elementary school. Therefore, different perspectives, by different authors, have been used to investigate its contributions to learning. In this article, we seek to contribute to these discussions, based on the Theory of Registers of Semiotic Representation, from the perspective of transitive representations. The goal is to expand the debate about the auxiliary representations in mathematical learning, especially the case of manipulative materials used in teaching the decimal numbering system. For cut and exe9mplification purposes, we reflected on the case of the Base Ten Blocks and the Abacus, widely used in the early years of elementary school and encouraged by textbooks and guiding documents. Through this approach, it was possible to understand the semiotic role of this type of representation for mathematical learning, considering that they are resources that enable different mathematical thoughts, although their main role is to assist the student in understanding the registers of semiotic representation. ; O uso de materiais manipuláveis faz parte da cultura escolar, principalmente nos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental. Por isso, diferentes perspectivas, por parte de diferentes autores, têm sido usadas para investigar suas contribuições à aprendizagem. Neste artigo, buscamos colaborar com essas discussões, tendo como base a Teoria dos Registros de Representação Semiótica, a partir do olhar sobre as representações transitórias. O objetivo é ampliar o debate acerca das representações auxiliares na aprendizagem matemática, sobretudo o caso dos materiais manipulativos utilizados no ensino do sistema de numeração decimal.
