Congruence between interests and occupational aspirations: its relationship with personality and self-efficacy in a sample of high school students in Mexico.

Introduction. The assessment of person-environment congruence is important in vocational and career guidance. The aims of this study were to obtain descriptive statistics for the congruence between realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional (RIASEC) vocational interests and occupational aspirations, and to relate congruence scores to vocational self-efficacy and the Big Five personality traits in a sample of high school students. Method. The participants were 274 second- and third-year high school students from Cajeme (Sonora, Mexico). The Self-Directed Search (SDS), the Vocational Self-Efficacy Scale and the Global Personality Assessment Scale were administered. Congruence was measured using the Iachan and C indexes. Descriptive statistics and percentile rankings of congruence scores were obtained. To explore the association between variables, partial correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed. Results. Female students obtained higher mean scores on the two congruence indexes than male students; however, the difference was only significant for the Iachan index. The Big Five personality traits in the aggregate explained significant amounts of variability in congruence scores, with small to moderate effect sizes. Openness to experience was the only significant predictor. Self-efficacy dimensions were not significantly associated with congruence scores. Discussion or Conclusion. The results provide information in the line of research on the relationships between the congruence construct with the Big Five-factors of personality and vocational self-efficacy. The study has practical implications in vocational assessment and guidance; the descriptive statistics for the two congruence indexes (Iachan and C) will allow more valid interpretations of the scores of this construct in populations with characteristics similar to those of the sample. Introducción. La evaluación de la congruencia persona-ambiente es relevante en la práctica de la asesoría vocacional y profesional. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron obtener estadísticos descriptivos sobre la congruencia entre los intereses vocacionales realista, investigador, artístico, social, emprendedor y convencional (RIASEC) y las aspiraciones ocupacionales en una muestra de estudiantes, y relacionar las puntuaciones de congruencia con la autoeficacia vocacional y los cinco-factores de personalidad. Método. Los participantes fueron 274 estudiantes de 2° y 3° de bachillerato de Cajeme (Sonora, México). Se aplicaron la prueba Búsqueda autodirigida (SDS), la Escala de autoeficacia vocacional y la Escala de evaluación global de personalidad. La congruencia se midió con los índices lachan y C. Se obtuvieron estadísticos descriptivos y rangos percentiles de las puntuaciones de congruencia, se realizaron análisis de correlaciones parciales y de regresión lineal múltiple jerárquica para explorar la asociación entre las variables. Resultados. Las estudiantes mujeres obtuvieron puntuaciones medias más elevadas en los dos índices de congruencia que los hombres; sin embargo, esta diferencia solo fue significativa en el índice lachan. Los cinco-factores de personalidad explicaron, en conjunto, porcentajes significativos de variabilidad de las puntuaciones en congruencia, con tamaños del efecto entre pequeños y moderados. Apertura a la experiencia fue el único predictor significativo. Las dimensiones de autoeficacia no se asociaron significativamente con las puntuaciones de congruencia. Discusión y conclusiones. Los resultados aportan información en la línea de investigación sobre las relaciones entre el constructo "congruencia" con los cinco-factores de personalidad y la autoeficacia vocacional. Las implicaciones prácticas se sitúan en el ámbito de la evaluación y asesoramiento vocacional, los estadísticos descriptivos de los dos índices de congruencia (Iachan y C) permitirán realizar interpretaciones más válidas de las puntuaciones de este constructo en poblaciones con características similares a las de la muestra.
