      The learning of vocabulary is the core of second language acquisition. Which words to learn and where to find them? Of course in textbooks. How many words should a student know to communicate successfully? Which words are included in textbooks? These are the questions which are discussed in the article. The aim is to compare the lexical aspect of English textbooks during time period from 1920 till nowadays. In the research was concluded that for successful communication in English a student should know about 2500 lexical items. There were only a few or even one textbook used in each class during time period from 1920 till 1990. The amount of textbooks in English has increased enormously during time period from 1990 till nowadays. The number of English textbooks, workbooks, teacher's books etc. approved by Education Ministry in Latvia has reached 802 items. As a result of such a wide range of textbooks another problem was detected. In the research it was concluded that the vocabulary offered in the textbooks differs very much. So, if some students, which studied English from different textbooks, would meet, they might have difficulties in communication because they had learnt different vocabulary. The question which arose during the research is: which words should be included in the final exam to test student's real knowledge, if the students have studied from textbooks which have significantly different vocabulary.
